New Financial Literacy Classes for Juniors

A recent CBS news report labeled young adults Generation Plastic because the average college graduate has 3-4 credit cards. Too many people are not prepared to manage credit cards and other kinds of credit. Sunflower has partnered with the Youth Empowerment Education Project and Hope Street Youth Development to add a unit of financial literacy training to the American History class that Wichita high school juniors must take. Project instructors will teach the class once a week for 16 weeks this fall.

Students will learn how to manage their money, open bank accounts, balance their checkbooks, avoid credit card interest and fees, avoid high interest short term loans, and establish good credit. Sunflower and its partners have met with Denise Wren, Superintendent of Wichita high schools, and curriculum specialists to determine the best way to provide this crucial education to young people BEFORE they get into serious financial difficulty.

For more information about this bold new program, call Sunflower’s Lead Organizer, J. J. Selmon, at 264-9972, ext. 12.
